Abstract

Learning about international trends has great significance in thinking about waste management in Japan. The Japan Society of Waste Management Experts took two study tours in 1990 planned by the International Relation Committee of the society, according to the society's regulations of "communication and cooperation with other domestic and international societies in the field" and "collection of academic and technical data about waste management" . In the first study tour, we attended at The International Conference on Organohalogen Compounds: "DIOXIN'90" at Bayreuth, Germany, "ENVIRO'90" and "ISWA (International Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Association) Annual Conference" at Amsterdam, The Netherlands in September 1990. In the second study tour, we attended "The 3rd Pacific Basin Conference on Hazardous Waste" and visited some waste management facilities. In spite of short preparation time, there were 5 participants in the first tour, and 13 in the second. These international conferences provided good opportunities to understand differences in waste problems between Japan and other countries.
