Abstract

Regional disposal has merits like easiness of siting of disposal sites, improving disposal effciency, and better countermeasures for environmental protection to waste disposal facilities. Therefore regional disposal is more necessary for future waste disposal. In Japan, 2/3 of municipal governments, or 1/3 of total population receive regional waste disposal service. In future, acceptance conditions for regional disposal should be proposed with consideration of environmental protection and comprehensive planning for regional development. The contents of the symposium "About Regional Disposal" held at the first annual meeting of the Japan Society of Waste Management Experts are arranged here to have "Special Issue: Regional Disposal of Solid Waste" .
