Abstract

In Japan, stringent emission standards for the air pollutants such as particulate matter, NOx, SOx and HCl are enforced for MSW incinerators. Flue gas purification systems, therefore, have been installed widely to meet these regulations. At present, removal of non-regulated micro-pollutants such as Dioxins, Furans and heavy metals is additionally required for these systems. Due to the difficulty of getting an installation site, reduction in scale is also expected.

In 1988, the Ministry of Public Welfare and the Japan Waste Research Foundation started the Research and Development Program for the Effective and Compact Flue Gas Purification Systems as a 5-year project.

In this paper, an outline of the above mentioned program is described.
