Abstract

Many chemicals are used widely in the world, and some of these are discharged into the environment. In this paper, outlines and characteristics of destruction of the ozone layer in the stratosphere by chlorofluorocarbons, marine pollution by organochlorine compounds such as PCB, DDT and BHC, and other global pollution by chemicals are described.

The regulations for production of chemicals and for treatment of hazardous wastes are also introduced. Further, problems in pollution control are discussed from view-points of the kinds of pollutants, detection methods, regulations and risk evaluation methods.

Key words: chemicals, air pollution, chlorofluorocarbon, marine pollution, organochlorine compounds
