Abstract

I introduce the transition for the construction and management techniques on the final disposal sites in Japan up to date from 1955, and how they will turn forward 2000. First, I explain the differences on the basic concepts in the landfill techniques between Japan and the West, and develop and suggest the construction and management techniques on the landfill sites for the case of Japan in order to solve the NIMBY syndrome which is spreading all over the world. Second, I introduce a concept called the Closed System for the final disposal sites which may be practical from now on, and suggest that the landfill sites forward 2000 should have not only intermediate treatment facilities but also resource storage and recovery function.

Key words: closed system, NIMBY syndrome, aerobic landfill, anaerobic landfill
