Abstract

"Unused energy" is a term that the Japanese have created; it includes refuse incineration heat, factory waste heat, urban waste heat such as accumulated heat in subway tunnels and loss from electric power cables or substations, and heat sources such as river water, sea water, and sewage. General methods utilizing these unused energies are described, and potential available amounts of these energies are estimated for the Kansai region. Practical examples of utilizing unused energies are taken up, and are explained in concrete ferms. Finally, problems involved in "how to enhance the utilization of unused energies" are discussed.

Key words: unused energy, refuse, waste heat, sewage, heat pump
