Abstract

Prior to any design or selection of liner sheet to be used for a controlled landfill, applicability under the foundational and constructional conditions of the site should be made confirmed. Also required is a method to test and assess or evaluate the liner sheet in connection with such environmental factors. There is however no established method for this purpose. In view of these facts, the authors analyzed those factors which can cause breakage to the placed liner sheet and proposed a testing method to measure the puncture resistance of the sheet against damage which may directly lead to leakage of leachate if it occurs in the landfill. In trial manufacture of the puncture resistance testing apparatus, the sharpness of the point of the rod is determined by measuring angles of crushed stone. The experiments have shown that the proposed testing method is promising as a system to evaluate the puncture resistance of the liner sheet.
