Abstract

Salts in landfill sites has become a problem in recent times. A study was carried out on the material balance from production and import through to the scrapping of chlorine, which is the root cause of this problem. As a result, it was found that far more chlorine is being consumed and scrapped (5,700,000tons/year) than is being produced (840,000tons/year) in Japan. Moreover, among general waste, it was found that 100,000 tons of chlorine is accumulating in landfill sites every year.
