Abstract
Refractories hold a key to the practical success of ash melting and gasification melting furnaces. This paper deals with the factors affecting refractory performance, and outlines the general concepts for selecting refractories that suit the operational conditions. Slag corrosion is the major wear factor in the melting zone, so the effects of temperature, slag composition, slag movement and refractory cooling on the corrosion rate are discussed while considering the properties of oxides and non-oxide refractories. The reaction with molten metals is also discussed. The effect of corrosive acid and/or alkali gas is important in the combustion zone. The reaction behavior with chlorine gas is discussed based on laboratory testing.
