Abstract
The Kansai group has been studying the relationship between citizens and solid waste management (SWM). This paper indicates that the role of citizens in SWM has been expanding. Reports written by the Kansai group discuss the need for public participation in establishing SWM strategies, the capacity building of citizens for appropriate SWM, and the development of SWM systems specific to a certain locality, are summarized. Issues on public participation which will later arise are also discussed.

Key words: solid waste management, solid waste management planning, public participation, role of citizens
