Abstract
The Waste-to-Energy Research & Technology(WTERT)Council is an organization sponsored by most of the U.S. waste-to-energy plants. The mission of the WTERT Council is to advance both the economic and environmental performance of waste-to-energy technologies.
The fall meeting of the WTERT Council was held on November 13-14, 2003 at Columbia University in New York City. Nearly 80 WTE researchers and scientists from industry, federal, state and local governments, as well as from universities around the world attended and discussed waste-to-energy technologies, economic and environmental performances, and related public administration issues. Several speakers from the U.S, Canada, Europe, China and Israel gave presentations on the state of the global WTE industry. University Ash Consortium, one of the WTERT projects, was introduced as a beneficial use of WTE ash. Waste management in New York City, including paper recycling and research on the use of GIS in siting new WTE facilities was also presented. One of the speakers discussed lessons learned from the 1992 Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Plan for NYC. The next WTERT fall meeting is scheduled for October 7-8, 2004 and will be held in conjunction with the finish of Columbia University's 250th Anniversary celebration.
